Preliminary Project - Magazine Research

Magazine Research
General conventions of a magazine cover;
  • ·         Big, eye-catching, bold title/name of magazine
  • ·         Relevant picture
  • ·         Multiple sub-titles with brief summaries about main features in the issue
  • ·         The main focus of the cover is in the largest font sub-title and also relates to the picture
  • ·         Sub-headings generally surrounding the picture so they don’t block the view
  • ·         Barcode
  • ·         Date/Issue number
  • ·         Slogan or logo
  • ·         Freebies and/or a competition
  • ·         The genre/theme of each magazine is normally roughly the same but has a different feature article to constantly keep the readers interested

For example:

All three of these magazine covers share the common conventions of a magazine cover, including the logo/title of the magazine in big font, but is so well known that a bit of it is covered by the photo and is still recognisable. As you can see on the GQ magazine and VOGUE, the text is surrounding the picture so they're not blocking the view for the readers, but still can spike the interest of the readers.
