G321 - Re-shoot Photos

I used a variety of different shots for my re-shoot, including close ups of the model's head and shoulders as well as medium shots of her upper body. As well as this, with each pose, I took it in both landscape and portrait so I could use them in different contexts without stretching the picture uncomfortably.

G321 - Front Cover Photos

Front Cover Pictures

G321 - Contents Page Photos

Contents Page Pictures

With some of the contents page pictures, I decided to put them in a Polaroid style photo frame with the filters and effects to add a vintage effect to the contents page. Then to make it seem more realistic, I put the issue date along the bottom in a handwriting style font. This makes the pictures themselves seem more professional as well as indie/alternative, like my magazine.

G321 - Mock Ups

Front Cover Mock Up 1

The emphasis of this style is to look at Natasha Sky and be able to easily identify who she is with her name in big bold writing next to her. There are several other cover lines which are supposed to be in a smaller font than the feature article to show the reader that there is more to this article than just Natasha Sky.

Front Cover Mock Up 2

This front cover is simpler than the first as it only includes Natasha Sky, given that she's a well-known musician in the UK and that the magazine will sell anyway, regardless of who is and isn't on the page. Instead of looking away, Natasha Sky is looking directly at the camera to have an effect on the audience.

Contents Page Mock Up
On the contents page, the layout is split into three columns, in which the middle one will always be dedicated to the feature artist(s). Then there will be the monthly reviews found throughout the magazine down the left and regular features on the right, e.g. recommendations.

Feature Article Mock Up

On the feature page, which takes up two pages, a landscape picture will take up a majority of the room to put more of an emphasis on Natasha Sky rather than the article itself. A pull quote will be on the picture to attract the reader's attention. Then, another pull quote will be put in the middle of the text to spread it out and make the article not seem as long.

At the bottom of every page will be an A along with the page number and the magazine website, www.anthem.co.uk.

G321 - Rough Draft of Article

Natasha Sky is BACK!
After a year off, internet sensation Natasha Sky is back and ready to show off her NEW music to the world through her album and world tour, NOW.

Natasha Sky, the 19 year old singer-songwriter who rose to fame and won the nation's heart at the mere age of 16 when she was spotted performing at a local pub, is back. After years of being the Nation's favourite sweetheart, with her sweet, unique voice and bright blue eyes, the world suffered a Natasha Sky blackout following the very public and humiliating break up her ex (he-who-shall-not-be-named) planted on her back in early 2013. Sky found it in herself to pick up her guitar again and create a new album, Now, after claiming that she was “done with guys, done with fame and definitely done with music.” A world tour is at her fingertips as she shows off her new rock-n-roll image to the world with her upcoming single, “Torn Hearts”.

After spending the day with her in the village where she grew up in, I personally felt extremely sorry for the girl. He-(again)-who-shan't-be-named had managed to put her through hell and back with his words, via Twitter, which still remain on his page to this day. “I can't get the last words he said to me out of his head. I won't repeat them, but they weren't... very pretty.” Sky sighed, digging her hands into the pockets of her leather jacket and kicking a stone on the pavement. We discovered parts of her home-town which dug up reasons for Natasha to get back into music. “Music has always been a huge part of my life, so it was extremely difficult to stay away from my piano.” Sky confessed with a laugh. “The album is like... it's like (excuse my language) a big “fuck you” to all the people who have ever hurt me, and hurt the people who listen to my music. I just had to turn all my anger, all my pain and sorrow and betrayal into an album, and suddenly I felt a lot better. I could breathe again.”

Yet, despite the traumatic experience she suffered at the young age of 18, Natasha Sky's passion for her music returned, forcing her to clear the fog and play the abandoned keys of her piano and soon - very soon - she'll be hitting the stages on her world tour and album, both titled "Now" is to hit the shelves on December 12th, while her world tour kicks off in London in early February. "I am so excited! There are literally no words at all to describe how much I'm looking forward to getting on the stage and just forgetting everything," She gushed as we approached the run-down skate park beneath the setting sun and settling dusk. Despite wearing heeled ankle boots, it wasn't long before they were kicked off and she was running up the ramps, giggling her head off.  "I just thought that a new image would be relevant to having a new sound, y'know? I can't keep wearing pretty dresses and singing about falling in love - I've grown up now, and so has my music." Natasha said thoughtfully as she zipped her boots back up, adjusted her jeans and quickly checked her ruby red lipstick. Then, she flashed me a genuine grin before we called it a day and went our separate ways.

G321 - Artists Planning

Feature Artist: Natasha Sky
Natasha Sky is a solo artist but has a band who perform with her at live concerts and gigs as well as record the instruments Natasha can't do herself, e.g. the drums.

Natasha Sky is a 19 year old singer-songwriter from the suburbs of West Berkshire. She generally writes indie/alternative music about her travels and experiences, all ranging from the love of foreign cities to past romances.
She was spotted singing an original song at a school concert aged 16, where a fellow student had recorded and posted the video online. She became an internet superstar and was almost immediately offered several record deals.

Natasha Sky is doing an interview with Anthem after hiding behind a media black-out for a year, to promote her new album and tour, which come hand in hand with a new image and sound. The interview is to reassure her followers that she's coming back, but isn't the same person she was a year ago. It's different to her past work, so she's trying to appeal to both hers and Anthem's followers, as well as the whole world in general.

Sky's new appearance is very different to her old one, which is why she's doing this interview. Beforehand, her image would have been quite boho and pure to show to her audience that she is a good role model for teens. Now, her publicist wants her audience to grow up with her, and this means an edgier look to match her edgier sound.

The location for the photoshoot will be outside, rich in earth colours such as browns and greens. The main focus, beside Natasha Sky, will be the run-down skateboarding ramp which she will be standing on. Covered in graffiti and completely worn out, it adds to the rustic and edgy sound of Sky's new album, Now. The indie background matches the indie style of the magazine, as well as the artist herself. There will be a series of shots, ranging from close ups portraits to landscape long shots. There will also be a variety of poses, with some looking away from the camera and others where she's looking directly at the camera, as if she's making eye contact with the readers.

In the photos, Natasha will be wearing roughly the outfit below.
I decided to exclude an instrument in this picture as the article is going to be mainly about her as a person, not her music. Her music will be mentioned but it's not as big of a deal as Natasha Sky 'coming back from a year long break.'

My chosen model, Tara Banahan, suited my magazine well as she had the look that I was going for; girly but edgy. With the right make up and costume, she suits the magazine perfectly. To add to this, her style and image reflects the target audience's in the way that they stand out from the crowd in their own way.

Other Artists
Other artists who will feature on the page will be fictional bands who follow the indie/alternative genre of this magazine. In total, there will be roughly 15 artists on the contents page due to the average artists mentioned in real magazines is 17-20. They will follow as:
  •  Amber Fire
  • Sound
  • Pause (one of the only other artists to have their picture on the contents and/or front page)
  • Jocelyn (one of the only other artists to have their picture on the contents and/or front page)
  • Radio Fun
  • Pascal and the Funk
  • Tokyo Ring
  • The Cause
  • Samara + the Crew
  • The Album
  • Boomboxes
  • Closure
  • Natasha Sky

These artists will be featured on the front page as cover lines, and then will have pictures on the contents page so that the audience can recognise their faces and easily identify who they are. The artists are also needed so that the readers have more than one reason to buy the magazine; if they aren't a fan of Natasha Sky, then they can read about other bands and musicians they are fans of.

Pause, a duo, and Jocelyn will be featured on the front cover and/or contents page with their pictures to appeal to and cater for the target audience's needs. Jocelyn will be on the front cover while Pause will be on both, like Natasha Sky.

G321 - Photography Plan

Natasha Sky photography plan
My photos are going to be taken outside in a run-down skate park, surrounded by countryside scenes, evergreen trees and overcast skies. The model will be wearing the chosen outfit as shown previously to portray not only the feature artists 'sound', but the style of the magazine.

On the front cover of the magazine, my model will either look away from the camera or directly at the camera to not only make the magazine look professional, but to give an effect on the readers. She'll be wearing the chosen outfit shown previously.

Then, on the contents page, there will be another photograph of her, but in the style of a polaroid. It will be placed at the top, with the date of the photoshoot and/or her name, as if it's a memory for a scrapbook. Another picture to do with her will be placed beneath her personal table of contents, which will either be another picture of her or her single artwork.

Finally, on the feature page, there will be a landscape picture of her, taking up a majority of the room as after I had done some market research, I had found out that readers prefer more images than text, so I will follow this through with a picture-based feature page.

In all the pictures, the setting will be the same, as will the outfits so that it looks as if the pictures have been taken at the same time. This adds a personal touch to the pictures and also shows the type of relationship Natasha Sky, my chosen artist, has with her fans.

There will be a series of shots, with some close ups and some long shots, then some where Natasha Sky is looking away from the camera and others where she's looking directly at it. This leaves lots of room for a choice for the cover, contents page and feature page.

Pause. photography plan
For the Pause. photoshoot, the duo will be wearing professional looking suits and ties and will be leaning against an orange brick wall. There will be a series of shots, ranging from close ups of the pair and long shots of them on stairs, opposite from one another.

I chose for them to be wearing suits as it shows the audience that they are a professional band who take their music seriously. As new artists to the UK and to Anthem, this is them proving themselves since the audience of Anthem take music as a whole very seriously. As well as this, it matches their indie genre of music.

In most shots, they will look moody and be looking down the camera to add an effect on the audience.

G321 - House Styles

Colour Scheme
The colour scheme covers the colour of the font, titles and background of the paper. I will keep it the same throughout the magazine so that the mood and the effect created will be constant. I have decided on using red, white and black as it's not only a common colour scheme, but the red will stand out and grab the attention of my audience.
I have these colours as they can appeal to both males and females, with a variety of blues, greens, pinks and purples. This informs the target audience that anyone can read it and that it's targeted at both genders. Then I chose the black and white for an element of sophistication.

Font
Although the font for the masthead is 'Blake', the font for the rest of the magazine will be different as if all the articles were typed out with the 'Blake' font then it would be difficult to read. It also would look unprofessional.
I narrowed it down to the fonts below:

I decided to use 'Georgia' for my main font as it can be read easily and clearly by the audience. It's not too difficult to read and looks sophisticated with the masthead. This is the main body of the font and will be used throughout. Furthermore, it doesn't look too 'girly' or 'manly', so either gender won't be put off by it.

Visual Features
On every page I will have the page number on the outside corners in square brackets next to a smaller version of the masthead next to it. This is a form of branding and is there to remind the readers that they're reading an "Anthem" magazine and not a different one. Alongside this, I will have the month and the year of the issue so that the readers can clearly see how recent the news is. For example:

Then there will be the website name at the end of each article to inform the readers that there is more to read and look at online, if they wish to do so. Drop caps will be in purple or in a white font against a purple background, and finally, the colours of the background behind the text will be one of the background colours or the main purple/lilac with black font so it's easier to read what's written there.

G321 - Rock Sound House Styles

The font which Rock Sound uses for their magazine covers stays the same with each issue; it's only the colour and content that changes. The recognisable 'R' for the name is always in the corner, below articles which can be found in the magazine, and above key features in the magazine.

Their house colours are basically the three primary colours, red, yellow and blue as they alternate these colours around, e.g. sometimes the title will be red, the text background will be yellow and the picture boarders will be blue.

Rock Sound are known for using quite loud, bold colours to attract the attention of their readers since these yellows, reds and blues are eye-catching. It reflects the genre and style of Rock Sound quite nicely as most of the artists found in it produce loud, bold music for their fans.

Rock Sound have branded each page with a small "rocksound.tv" next to the page number, which are all enclosed in square brackets, so it looks like: "[22] rocksound.tv". This is apparent on each page, so it's Rock Sound's way of reminding the readers what magazine they're reading.

Like Q, Rock Sound have a reviews page which can be found in each article. This is to keep a sense of familiarity for the readers as having something brand new every single month can be quite overwhelming for readers. They're found on the same pages each week and are divided into two sections: album reviews and live reviews.

Throughout the magazine, bright bold colours are used to attract the readers to certain articles and pull quotes. This technique is used for almost every interview in the magazine as they want their readers to look at the page and read it. It also makes the page seem like it's shouting at the audience to read it.
