G321 - Initial Ideas

1. Fashion/Music Magazine
  • Age range - 16-40
  • Female orientated
  • Class ABC1 readers
  • Psychologically, readers may be mainstreamers, aspirerers, succeeders and resigned.
  • Artists like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Lorde, Florence Welch
  • Very formal, classy language. Third party style writing - as if the reader is watching the writer say the words
  • Clean, simple layout . Everything is in line and organised. Thin fonts, front cover mainly about the feature article. Pastel colours, e.g. purple, beige. 
  • Artists generally feature in magazine to show the audience that they have changed, e.g. Miley Cyrus. Shows the serious side to them.

2. Indie/Alternative Magazine
  • Age range 16-25
  • Equally male and female orientated
  • Class BC1 readers
  • Psychologically, readers may be explorers and/or reformers.
  • Artists like The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana, Lana Del Ray
  • Quite distant, formal and sophisticated language
  • Simple, recognisable layout. Few words on the front cover - more pictures. Generally neutral colours are used along with bold fonts.
  • Artists generally feature to promote, e.g. gigs, tours, albums, singles etc.

3. Pop Magazine
  • Age range 11-18
  • Female orientated
  • Class ABC1C2
  • Psychologically, readers are predomintantly mainstreamers and aspirers.
  • Artists like One Direction, Ariana Grande, Union J, Katy Perry
  • Informal, quite patronising language, with that element of chattiness and fun. Tend to use trends to their advantage, e.g. hashtags. Make up their own words out of the names of featured artists, e.g. 'Robsessed' out of actor Robert Pattinson.
  • Quite a busy lay out with bright colours and swirly font. Lots of images and puncuation, e.g. exclamation marks. 
  • Artists feature to keep their fans updated and to sometimes promote new albums, show new image etc. Sometimes actors and other people in the celebrity world will feature, but it's almost always musicians.
 

4. Punk Rock Magazine
  • Age range 15-30
  • 60:40 Male: Female ratio
  • Class ABC1C2 readers
  • Psychologically, readers are strugglers, reformers and explorers.
  • Artists like All Time Low, 5 Seconds of Summer, Green Day, Linkin Park
  • Informal, very lazy language, quite chatty and 'shouty'. Very in-your-face. Short, snappy head-lines and titles. Informal, carefree pictures of the artists.
  • A busy yet organised front  layout. A few of the titles might be wonky on the page, but other than that the layout is quite loud. Bold, primary colours used. Pictures to reflect the titles and words. The magazine is like the punk rock version of pop magazines.
  • Artists feature in the magazine to promote and keep fans updated.
