Top of the Pops
The
cover of this magazine shows who their target predominantly are since
it’s
a special edition ‘poster magazine’, with 50 posters of various pop artists,
e.g. One Direction, The Wanted, Justin Bieber
etc. This lets us know that this is also aimed at young teenage girls, perhaps
around the age of 11-15, as it says at the top, ‘100% devoted to Lush Lads!”
It’s aimed at girly girls who like boys, especially ones in the pop industry as
they all sing about similar things, e.g. love and finding the perfect girl.
This
reflects the idea that the readers of TOTP magazine are also ‘100% devoted to
Lush Lads', just like the magazine is. This tells us what sort of audience TOTP has.
A
competition advertised amongst all the posters would add to the reason why the
target audience would want to buy this particular article, and presumably, the
others. This, again, shows that TOTP know who their target audience is and what
they want from the magazine.
On
the cover, it shows a small majority of the artists whose posters are included
in this magazine. Having ‘heartthrobs’ such as One Direction as the main image
is bound to attract a large audience since most girls aged 11-18 are fans of
the band. This shows that Top of the Pops have a clear understanding of who
their audience are and what they want from the magazine. It also shows that Top of the Pops are aware of the latest trends and that they know that a majority of pop music fans want One Direction posters, gossip and interviews.

The
front cover refers to a majority of the artists by simply their first names, as
it’s assumed that in the UK, these artists are well-known and adored by their
young fanbases,
e.g. “Conor”
and “Justin” instead of their full names.
The
kind of music fans TOTP are targeting are
completely different to those of Q readers as this magazine is aimed at
preteens who are
apart of large fanbases,
e.g. “Directioners”
or “Beliebers”.
It’s clear that readers of TOTP won’t be reading Kerrang”,
and vise
versa. The readers would expect to find pop idols in these magazines, such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez etc. people who are associated with making feel-good music and are "American Angels". At the same time as this, TOTP knows that their readers want boys in there too; bands and singers like the ones featured on the poster article shown.
As well as this, the colours of this article are bright, poppy colours such as bright pink and yellows. These colours have been chosen instead of dark and dull colours because it reflects the content of the magazine; bubbly, happy articles about pop singers who have a young group of followers and always have something inspirational to say to them. These colours are bright and eye-catching to the readers, as well as making the magazine itself easily identified as it's a common colour scheme found in Top of the Pops magazines.
